The state of Georgia has set another execution date for Troy Davis on September 21st. We believe Georgia is planning on executing an innocent man and have joined in the fight to save the life of Troy Davis. We are not alone in this; hundreds of thousands across the world know of the injustice being done to Troy, the coliseum was illuminated in solidarity with his struggle for freedom. Getting involved in the fight for this man's life now has a v ery limited timeline. We pledge our support to this fight, and urge others to do the same.
Troy has spent two decades on death row wrongfully convicted of the shooting of police officer Mark MacPhail. Troy was convicted of the crime despite no physical evidence against him and was sentenced to death based solely on the testimony of nine witnesses. Since his conviction, 7 of the 9 witnesses have recanted all or part of their testimony -- claiming, among other things, that their original testimony was coerced by law enforcement. Of the remaining two witnesses against Troy, one is the primary suspect. Several witnesses say that it was this man, not Troy, who killed Officer MacPhail.
Troy Davis' only chance for survival lies in making the Georgia parole board aware of the weaknesses in the case against him and of the international outcry against the pending execution. We are demanding that President Obama not turn a blind eye to this injustice, we want a statement affirming clemency from him. We demand that the Governor of Georgia, Nathan Deal, and the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles grant clemency for Troy Davis now!
The story of Troy Davis is not an isolated injustice specific to Georgia, but rather exemplifies a failed public policy that condemns to death our most vulnerable citizens. We are ALL Troy Davis. We say this because his fight is our fight; his fate reflects our own grasp of justice.
